And it would especially not work if budget is a concern. Also, I can’t imagine wasting valuable vacation time trying to find lodging.
Easy hop from any of the other three major islands. This is our first visit to the Big Island (although 4th visit to Hawaii). First a confession, I usually plan very detailed trip of all our travels but have COMPLETELY failed to do so for this one. Other than flights and hotels, forgot to do any planning at all. so am scrambling now for making the most out of this trip.

While I don't think you have to fear for your life, I don't know what you are envisioning the island to be like. (It is not like Kaua`i.) We will do most/all of our snorkeling and "beaching" when we are on the west side, though we plan to see the Green and Black sand beaches from Volcano. Sandy’s Drive In in Kealeakakua is probably 90% local customers. We share their special of the day and a mango smoothie. Sun dried specialities in Kealeakakua makes delicious bowls and has fresh and dried or smoked fish probably 90% locals. We order smoked ahi to have on hand during our time on the Big Island every year.
