As long as I can remember for, the magic attack from a dark beast was only used if you attacked them first. I got no idea when but sometimes I'd notice them using only magic from a distance and some attacking with melee if you have a cannon set up. Thinking about it now though, it didn't really make much sense nowadays.

Personally, I prefer Airut, Celestial Dragons, Dark Beasts, Edimmu, Glacors, Dagannoth Kings and Elves. Good mixture of high exp tasks and good cash/bossing ones.
