At one point I was swarmed by near 15 scavs over a 5 minute period. took out 10 of them by picking up weapons when i got the chance but they kept coming and it was really strange. I know for fact, Pistol (unloaded) + 2 spare Mags in the pockets is enough to avoid the curse.

I thought the mechanic was for melee players only. Meaning bring a weapon or be tagged and cursed. Pistol even is good enough. About the other gear I didn't think it mattered. I watched a video on YouTube where a guy tested different scenarios. Seeing how I've been matching 27:21 minutes right now I'll tab out and see if I can find the vid.

It does feel like tagged and curse or at least something to force you out of the raid. As someone who normally extracts at 1-2 minutes left nearly every raid i see this happen a lot, certainly around the 10-7 min mark. But on maps like Reserve and factory it has a MUCH HIGHER chance of happening.
