Just equip the transponder, it works the same way as C4, i.e. it takes the node itself. Put the transponder in your hotbar and the nodes just in your inventory. Now the transponder should "load" itself when equipped in the hotbar. Now you can left click to place a node, or right click to activate the transponder.
